Obama Presidential Library
Studio VI . Fall 2016
The project creates a strong physical connection with the neighborhood through the expansion of the urban thread into the site. The project addresses monumentally by creating specific moments of visibility and exposure, while creating a trajectory of compression and decompression, both throughout the site and within the library itself. The site’s trajectory connects three main points: the image (museum), the outer life (institute), and the inner life (library). The library introduces a system that reflects within itself, promoting the reflection and expression between its functions and users. It addresses the controlled moments of prominence by subjecting both community and scholarly program to exposed elements and inmate instances, all while maintaining a strong connection between the two. These instances enable the scholars to work in an atmosphere reflective of the spirit of Obama’s presidency, while also allowing the community to interact and find support within the political and social system the library presents. Throughout all of this, the library maintains an environment of inclusivity and self awareness that lets users comprehend the structure of the political system that President Obama presented and pushed for and the way in which the people had a very prominent role in his administration.
